Pillow

For a Lover, his lover’s palms;

For a Child, his mother’s lap;

For a Traveller, his travel bag;

For a Friend, a friend’s shoulder;

At work, you tuck your arms;

While travelling, it’s your backpack;

During the workouts, we roll a towel;

In a park, its the soft grass;

And in the bed, we need that pillow.

We need to rest our head like unwinding the gears of a toy to halt. It is an astounding technique nature has found to regather our energy. Can you find something better than a “Pillow“? We all need one in some form or the other. Our eyes rummage for anything, to repose our head-on. Figuratively we rest our head, but in truth, we want to dissolve our soul into that dark oblivion space where time does not exist, and with it, everything and that comes to our life. But yet, ironically we do set up a timer to revive time back to our life.

In sadness, we hug that pillow, like yearning for something or someone leaving those teardrops on it. In happiness, we rest in peace tucking our palms behind our head and thanking our stars. In despair or shame, we dig our head deep inside the pillow. And in unbearing pain, we bury our head under that pillow. And like an unfaithful lover, in anger, we try to rip it off. And one cannot forget that good old time of sibling pillow fights?

The semantics of pillow its hardness, softness, height and the breadth keeps varying from person to person or from the state of your mood. Even the types of pillow keep changing from a living room to the bedroom.

Only God and pillow knows the entire semantics of your thoughts. And yet it has no complaints. Though everyone has their own pillow, only a few are thankful to her. And, yes! I did mention pillow as “her” coz only she can do such a marvellous job. It’s a multi-talented job description she has and can be executed only by her. But if I end up personifying a pillow, then that’s a whole new level of pillow talk of her turning into your own Counsellor.

  1. This is so beautifully written. I really loved the part where you decided on the gender for the pillow ?
